Study shows that on non-geek social networks, females represent the majority. You could argue that this is according to the world population ratio, but I’m not sure that would be correct.
On the other hand, on ‘geeky’ social networks/sites the audience is predominantly males. Communication (females) vs geekness (males)?
our online identities are comprised primarily of three specific kinds of data:
- Explicit or prescriptive data (i.e. the data that I input about myself: name, age, occupation, etc.)
- Activity or behavioral data (i.e. what I do and say online)
- Relationship data (i.e. my social graph and what my connections say about me)
Facebook is already capturing all this data and is probably the platform knowing the most about us. I guess the second one is Google. Or is it vice-versa?
Now if you don’t see the implications by yourself, I would encourage you to read the pros and cons of having all this data “out there” on Jeff Jonas’ article: ☞ Your Movements Speak for Themselves.
Tomorrow Belongs to What You Are, Do and Befriend Today
I’m not sure an iPhone app for a social network really qualifies as a geek app, but there have been way too much coverage of this app not to mention it.
While we can argue about the usefulness of the social networks, I think Facebook has innovated a lot in this space and I’ve heard that their iPhone app is a top notch. So even if you are not a Facebook user, maybe you should just check it for its features and design.
One last note about the Facebook iPhone app: according to some reports, it is the most downloaded app in the AppStore with something like 12mil. users.
I wish the desktop version of Facebook was this simple, fast and elegant.
Note: In case you already have the Facebook iPhone app installed and you don’t see an Update available, then you can do the following trick: delete the old app and install again. Even if AppStore may still be listing the 2.5 version, it is the new Facebook 3.0 iPhone app.
Update 1: If you are a Facebook chat user you better not upgrade the app. It is consistently crashing when trying to scroll through your online friends.
Update 2: I’ve got a Facebook iPhone app update (with version 3.0.1). The change log is quite long so I’m not sure its not the same one with the major 3.0 upgrade though.
Make sure you are checking the other apps in the iPhone apps for geeks series and the iPhone apps promotions.
